Der Band widmet sich dem Phänomen Raum als realer Voraussetzung, Denkmodell und Struktur poetischer Imagination. Er erweist die Historizität des Denkens im Raum und in Räumen an instruktiven Beispielen. Die präsentierten Aufsätze, hervorgegangen aus Beiträgen, die auf einer Hartmut Kugler gewidmeten Tagung im März 2009 an der Universität Erlangen gehalten wurden, betreffen vor allem die deutsche und französische Literatur des Mittelalters, schlaglichtartig aber auch historiographische, musik- und kunstwissenschaftliche, kartographische und wissensgeschichtliche Fragen. Im Ganzen entsteht ein facettenreiches Bild vom Zusammenspiel realgeographischer und imaginärer (symbolischer) Räume im Mittelalter, auf der Basis dreier Bereiche: ‚Räumlichkeit erdachter Welten‘ (I), ‚Umgang mit wirklichen Räumen‘ (II), ‚In Räumen denken‘ (III).

Spatial thinking plays an important role in medieval literature and culture. This is not only demonstrated by the large world maps and theological models of the cosmos in medieval times, but also by the spatial structure and motifs of the narrative literature. The articles in this volume explore how spaces are described in narratives from the 9th to the 16th century ‑ e.g. the world model in the Evangelienbuch of Otfrid of Weissenburg and the spatial semantics in the courtly romances and the landscape descriptions in Provençal poetry. The book sketches a fascinating panorama of imaginary spaces in the Middle Ages.
