Mercator's method of constructing his conformal projection in 1569
Mercator constructed his conformal projection geometrically. To create equidistant parallels, he used a method that had already been developed by Ptolemy. Mercator not only rediscovered this lost method, but also developed it further. This enabled him to geometrically determine the relationships between the parallels and the meridians necessary to create a conformal projection. This geometric basis allowed the projection to be created by mathematical calculation.
