This paper investigates the gradual adoption of the Mercator projection in world maps and nautical charts from the publication of Gerhard Mercator’s first major world map in 1569 to the 19th century. Based on a quantitative analysis of printed world maps up to 1700 and additional data from 1700 to 1990, the paper demonstrates that despite the projection’s clear advantages for navigation - particularly the representation of rhumb lines as straight lines - the Mercator projection was only slowly and incrementally adopted. The Mercator projection gained significance only in the 17th century and achieved near-exclusive use in nautical charts only by the 19th century.
